Playing enough?

ImageWe’re hard at work updating our library subject guides these days.  Work on the Recreation and Leisure Services guide has to brought to mind the notion of play. Not to mention that it is summer and that brings to mind beaches and biking and kicking a ball around in the park.

Believe it or not there is a certain amount of controversy around the idea of play these days.  There is a growing movement advocating for more unstructured play for children – there is a body of evidence that the opportunity for unstructured play is directly related to one’s capacity for creativity.  We all know kids who are heavily involved in organized sports or activities like dance with little room left for just jumping around at the beach or a playground. Is it good for them?  Should there be structured and unstructured play? More of one than the other?  So many questions … and guess who can help you find some answers?!  You got it – your library!

Many of Mohawk’s programs look at play – Recreation and Leisure, Early Childhood Education, Educational Assisstant, Child Youth Workers, etc.  You can bet that we have lots of resources to help you learn more about play.  Check out this list of books we have on hand. Read articles like this one called The Play Predicament in Parks and Recreation Magazine (our library databases have lots more).  And of course there is lots on the web, check out the site Right to Play.

Mark Twain had this to say about play:  “Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do. Play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do.”   What you doing without obligation these days??  Let us know!
